Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson meshes Jason Bourne and epic fantasy in this captivating adventure that throws an amnesiac wizard into time travel shenanigans—where his only hope of survival lies in recovering his missing memories。

A man awakes in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there。 Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts。 His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit。 The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?

I enjoyed this book, but I would say that I would easily put it as one of my least favorite Sanderson books。 This book wasn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t anything special and I didn’t love it nearly as much as I have enjoyed Sanderson’s other works。 The good: Steve Argyle put together some beautiful works of art in this book。 He did the art in the Way of Kings Leatherbound and did the same style art throughout this book。 I was very impressed。I really enjoyed the plot。 I thought it was a really coo I enjoyed this book, but I would say that I would easily put it as one of my least favorite Sanderson books。 This book wasn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t anything special and I didn’t love it nearly as much as I have enjoyed Sanderson’s other works。 The good: Steve Argyle put together some beautiful works of art in this book。 He did the art in the Way of Kings Leatherbound and did the same style art throughout this book。 I was very impressed。I really enjoyed the plot。 I thought it was a really cool idea for a book and I was really invested in the story。 It was fast paced and a nice read from start to finish。The bad: I didn’t feel connected to the characters in this book。 I felt the main focus was on the plot, rather than the character work。 I was really interested in this world that Sanderson has created。 There was quite a bit of lore that Sanderson created and gave us in this book。 I felt like the lore dumps were boring。 There were so many new words, new names being thrown out all at the same time that I had a hard time following exactly what was going on and I felt lost and confused。 Things were revisited throughout the book and I did feel that a lot of the lore did make sense by the end of the book。I hate to compare this to Tress of the Emerald Sea, but it is hard not to compare。 I felt like the art in Tress was so relevant to the plot and tied in so well with the story。 The art in this book didn’t tie into the plot。 So I was disappointed to not have quite the same experience with the art in this book as I did with Tress。 Alongside that was the cover。 I don’t hate the cover, but the cover teased in the kickstarter changed to the final cover of Tress。 This cover had very minor modifications, so I was disappointed to not have a new cover。 But, when I take away my comparison to Tress, these things weren’t a big issue for me in this book。 。。。more

I had a hard time getting into this one, but it was satisfying at the end。

“Oh hell”— I’ve been so bitter about my recent reads lately。 That I’ve genuinely NOT been liking anything I’ve read。“Frugal Wizard” is quite the outlier。 I didn’t enjoy this as much as Sanderson’s other works。 I felt detached a bit from the characters and overall story。 That could be from the whole— character has amnesia。 Sanderson even said in his postscript that he took a different direction with this book。 Unfortunately, I don’t think it really worked (IMO— at least not for me)。 Still, even t “Oh hell”— I’ve been so bitter about my recent reads lately。 That I’ve genuinely NOT been liking anything I’ve read。“Frugal Wizard” is quite the outlier。 I didn’t enjoy this as much as Sanderson’s other works。 I felt detached a bit from the characters and overall story。 That could be from the whole— character has amnesia。 Sanderson even said in his postscript that he took a different direction with this book。 Unfortunately, I don’t think it really worked (IMO— at least not for me)。 Still, even though I didn’t enjoy “Frugal Wizard,” it was a pleasant read。 Yes, much like John, I guess I too “exist in a quantum probability state。”3。75 stars (my rating and comparing system) 。。。more

A fun read of techno fantasy。 Sanderson continues to improve his characters but they are yet to be at the standard of his worlds。

I actually rated 4。5 stars on storygraph but here I rounded it to a 5。 It started slow and wasn't sure if I was in the mood to read the book, but it sneakily pulled me in。 I'll wait until 10% to see if I'm in the mood, then 20%, and next you know I'm over halfway done with the book and still listening to it。 I finished the book in one sitting。。。。and I LOVED IT。 By far a fantastic read and I wasn't disappointed。 I actually rated 4。5 stars on storygraph but here I rounded it to a 5。 It started slow and wasn't sure if I was in the mood to read the book, but it sneakily pulled me in。 I'll wait until 10% to see if I'm in the mood, then 20%, and next you know I'm over halfway done with the book and still listening to it。 I finished the book in one sitting。。。。and I LOVED IT。 By far a fantastic read and I wasn't disappointed。 。。。more

That was an awesome joyride。 Brandon has outdone himself on this one。 5/5 would travel to this dimension again。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved the idea of Frugal Wizard (TM) Inc so much, but I wish we had a better plot to go with。 I honestly found the main characters and overal story on the boring side, but the FAQ were so much fun, and the small story in the illustrations was adorable, letting me enjoy the book for the most part (though not as much as I think I would have wanted)

An interesting take on a time travel-ish story。 However, not a big fan of the first person writing, which in Brandon Sanderson’s case comes across as rather young adult。 I think his whimsical writing has improved, but that and the romance squeezed in at the end still come across as somewhat awkward。 Still, was fairly readable。

Perhaps。 I got pages of art at a time that seemed to tell its own story, only some of the elements of which I could find related directly to the story the book was telling。 I enjoyed them a lot anyway and found them funny and cute。 There was also full coloured art depicting some of the scenes which were just as good and artwork that seemed in world with the story。 Three different styles from each other which I found impressive considering they’re done by the same artist。The Writing:The book is written in two styles, first person narration and epistolary sections of a long winded and often hilarious tourist brochure from which this book derives its title。 The brochure sells itself so well that had the first person POV not highlighted all the downsides to the travel in question, I would have been more than tempted to put money down。 Unlike the first of the secret projects, Sanderson doesn’t deviate from his signature writing voice very far in the first person narration of this book。 It’s as crisp and clear as any of his other works and still has a few gem quotes to highlight。 Though if you’ve read Sanderson before, you know that he will have made up words in his books and the beginning of this book has a learning curve of weird words you have to get used to。 This is the only reason I take a point off as I found the start of this book a bit hard。The Plot:Do you really want to know? Too bad, I’m not giving away details。 Suffice to say, the book is exceptionally well paced as evidenced by the fact that I didn’t put it down and finished in less than a day, and it has all the surprises and sanderlanche goodness you want at the end。 I only guessed two very small things and they turned out to be nothing in comparison with all the great things I didn’t see coming。 The Characters:I didn’t like the main character at the start of the book and now that I’ve finished, I conclude that maybe I wasn’t meant to。 I really enjoyed the character arcs given to all the characters in this story and the MC’s arc specially as it resonates for me personally。 The characters were all very memorable but I do have a couple of favourites because they made me laugh or cry。 The World:Sanderson is a master world builder and this is no exception。 His use of the in world brochure allows him to both build and hand wave details away while asking all the most profound sci-fi questions then answering them, or not, in the most hilarious fashion imaginable。 I didn’t know I would end up reading about talking bananas so often while questioning ethics but Sanderson makes that possible here。 Conclusion:This book carries you away on an adventure from the start and doesn’t let go till the end。 It will make you laugh out loud and give you an existential crisis in the same page! I highly recommend to anyone who needs to laugh reading a feel good story。 。。。more

4。25/5 stars。 This book was great。 The story was completely gripping。 My favorite character was Johnny for sure。 Most of the character's development was good, but I found it annoying how everyone from Earth despises Johnny。 I also thought the first 20% was quite boring, but other than that, the entire book was amazing。 It feels like a fast paced sci-fi, which I love。 I would highly recommend。 4。25/5 stars。 This book was great。 The story was completely gripping。 My favorite character was Johnny for sure。 Most of the character's development was good, but I found it annoying how everyone from Earth despises Johnny。 I also thought the first 20% was quite boring, but other than that, the entire book was amazing。 It feels like a fast paced sci-fi, which I love。 I would highly recommend。 。。。more

Not as good as Tress (secret project 1) An entertaining (non-cosmere) cross between hitchikers guide to the galaxy, Project Hail Mary and Anglo Saxon England。Perhaps a little predictable in some of the larger story beats but compelling and enjoyable throughout。

It’s fun, it’s got the standard Sanderson cast of characters, it’s a bit of a Metroidvania, all very well and good。 My only complaint is some tonal dissonance。 Sanderson writes fantasy for adults and sci-fi for teens。 As a genre crossover, it doesn’t seem like this book knows which audience it’s for。 At times it’s a little too cheeky and cutesy to make a satisfying adult read。 At other times it leans on tropes and references it seems unlikely teens will get。 Dunno what to make of that。

While The Frugal Wizard Handbook。。。。 is overall an enjoyable read, I couldn't help compare this book to the last secret project novel, Tress of the Emerald Sea。 While the stories are very different (apart from the rescue mission Mcguffin), the tone of the books are very similar。 However, in Tress we follow a young girl and the narrator is a known character of the Cosmere。 This book is told in first person by a man in his 30s that is about as mature as a nineteen year old。 Tress oozes charm throu While The Frugal Wizard Handbook。。。。 is overall an enjoyable read, I couldn't help compare this book to the last secret project novel, Tress of the Emerald Sea。 While the stories are very different (apart from the rescue mission Mcguffin), the tone of the books are very similar。 However, in Tress we follow a young girl and the narrator is a known character of the Cosmere。 This book is told in first person by a man in his 30s that is about as mature as a nineteen year old。 Tress oozes charm throughout her adventure, and this book felt like a string of tired dad jokes。There is nothing wrong with the concept of the book。 John West portals to another dimension that has the current technology of early medieval England。 Having lost his memories due to the dimensional traveling, we learns about the world along with the reader。 There is a fun sense of discovery and I did enjoy this part of the book。 In this version of England, the local people follow a Norse-esque religion and confuse the main character for a mythological elf (or aelf)。 However, John discovers other people from his reality who are using it for their own nefarious purposes。 This mystery drives the plot of the book as John and his new friends embark to stop these people。My biggest problem with the book is the tone。 John is a thiry-something man who carries a lot of baggage。 As he remembers more of his past, he comes to realize he isn't the person he hoped he'd be。 This book is lot about his own self-discovery and reinvention。 While in theory this is a great idea, I simply didn't like his character。 He doesn't act like any adult I know。 The book read like a young YA novel but the main character is nearing middle age。 This tonal disconnect didn't work for me。 This character felt younger and less mature than Spensa in the Skyward series。 Spensa's voice is also much better realized in that series than John's in this book。 The humor also fell flat in this book as well。 While I laughed out loud several times in Tress, I rolled my eyes at most of the attempts at humor in this book。 Despite the main character, I still overall enjoyed the story。 I liked the unexpected change in direction around the halfway point in the novel。 The most enjoyable parts of the book was discovering the world。 And while I initially thought the side characters were flat, they began to grown on me。 However, the characterizations are the weakest parts of this book。 I thought Sanderson had done a wonderful job with the main side characters in Tress for such a short book, but the characters in this book are pretty run-of-the-mill。 By the end of the book, the main character does grow into a different person and there is a fairy tail-esque ending。 The Epilogue is probably the best part of the book because it does something quite different and adds a new and unexpected development in the world-building。 It's not mindblowing, but it's a nice touch。 I don't expect Sanderson to return to this world in future books, but you can use your imagination on what might come next。I overall had a good time, but apart from a few moments, I don't think this story is particularly memorable and I'll be surprised if this book becomes a fan favorite。 It's good, but far from Sanderson's best work。 Lastly, the audiobook doesn't quite match the ebook, particularly in the footnotes。 There are also times where Michael Kramer doesn't include "He said" or "She said" after a quote, which is sometimes ok for an audiobook since you know who is talking by the voice, but it was done inconsistently。 Basically, the audiobook and ebook could have used one more round of editing to ensure they synced up perfectly because it wasn't a one off occasion。 。。。more

4。5 rounded up。 I will do a longer review later but the story and the characters fell a little flat here for me。 Also, I need Sanderson to not have Kramer and Reading do every audio。 It is already annoying to have Mistborn characters sound like Stormlight characters。 Now, I have characters not even in the Cosmere sounding like Rock。 It takes me out of the story。 Also, this leans heavily toward Sci Fi, so don't go in thinking it is fantasy, 4。5 rounded up。 I will do a longer review later but the story and the characters fell a little flat here for me。 Also, I need Sanderson to not have Kramer and Reading do every audio。 It is already annoying to have Mistborn characters sound like Stormlight characters。 Now, I have characters not even in the Cosmere sounding like Rock。 It takes me out of the story。 Also, this leans heavily toward Sci Fi, so don't go in thinking it is fantasy, 。。。more

Format-ebook This was a fun time。 It is odd reading a Sanderson book written in first person perspective。 I loved the concept of this but there was just something about the main cast of characters that didn’t connect with me like I am used to when reading a Sanderson book。 I just wanted ish the tone would have been either a little more serious or a little more silly。 I can easily see people really loving this though。 The art in this book was top notch though。 Super cute on the FAQ pages。 This wa Format-ebook This was a fun time。 It is odd reading a Sanderson book written in first person perspective。 I loved the concept of this but there was just something about the main cast of characters that didn’t connect with me like I am used to when reading a Sanderson book。 I just wanted ish the tone would have been either a little more serious or a little more silly。 I can easily see people really loving this though。 The art in this book was top notch though。 Super cute on the FAQ pages。 This was probably more of a four star read for me personally but rounded up to a 4。5 because I just loved the art so much。 。。。more

It is a fun little project and it is really entertaining。 But I feel it is missing a bit of substance。 Sure, it is a story of redemption but I felt everything else around it (and that I traditionally expect in a Sanderson novel) was missing。 As I said, still quite enjoyable!
